Episcopal Church may put itself on a collision course with the rest of the Anglican Communion

A resolution that declares “God has called and may call such individuals (gay or lesbians), to any ordained ministry in The Episcopal Church” is now just one small step from becoming the official policy of the Episcopal church. The resolution was passed by wide margins by both of the church's main decision-making bodies, the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies, at its General Convention in Anaheim, California, south of Los Angeles. Tuesday's resolution appears to have ended an effective three-year moratorium on the election of gay bishops that had been agreed to cool tensions.

The resolution also recognized that "the baptized membership of The Episcopal Church includes same-sex couples living in lifelong committed relationships characterized by fidelity, monogamy, mutual affection and respect, careful, honest communication, and the holy love which enables those in such relationships to see in each other the image of God."

Rev. Susan Russell, who is president of Integrity USA, an advocacy and support group for LGBT Episcopalians, called the vote by the bishops "an historic move forward and a great day for all who support the full inclusion of all the baptized in the Body of Christ."

"The resolution passed today by the House of Bishops was another step in the Episcopal Church's 'coming out' process,” Russell said in a statement. "It sends a strong 'come and see' message to anyone looking for a faith community where God's inclusive love is not just proclaimed but practiced."

The new approach is likely to deepen theological fissures that led some traditionalist Episcopal congregations and dioceses last month to form a rival church. And it is almost certain to trigger a backlash among conservative Anglican leaders who have urged the U.S. church to refrain from relaxing ordination and marriage standards.

The spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, had expressed apprehension during a brief visit to the conference last week about decisions "that could push us further apart."

But progressives in the 2.1-million member denomination said the move toward inclusion reflects the reality of a church that is home to many partnered gays and lesbians who belong to parishes that encourage their involvement and already bless their unions.

"Being an Episcopalian means you can disagree and still worship together," said the Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno, bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles. "We're going to leave the door open for all those who disagree with us to find a place here and peace here."

"There is no desire from within the Episcopal Church to leave the Anglican fold," Ian Douglas, a member of the House of Deputies, told Reuters by telephone.

He said the resolution confirmed the church's "commitment to nondiscrimination" and "states what is on the books."

Divisions between liberals and conservatives already had undermined Episcopal Church unity by 2003, when it consecrated Gene Robinson of New Hampshire as the first bishop in Anglican history known to be in an openly gay relationship. No openly gay or lesbian bishop has been elected since Robinson's consecration.

A bishop who left the church last year predicted that the decisions made in Anaheim would increase strains with disaffected conservatives.

"Clearly the activists have done a good job promoting their agenda," said the Rt. Rev. Martyn Minns, a founding bishop of the newly formed Anglican Church in North America, which hopes to gain recognition from the Anglican Communion as a rival province to the Episcopal Church.

"The generosity shown by the rest of the communion has been astonishing and has been thrown back in their face," Minns said. "There will have to be a renegotiation of how the Episcopal Church fits into the family."

Black civil rights group threatens to fire its president in Los Angeles because he supports gay marriage

The Atlanta-based Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a 50-year-old civil rights group partly founded by Martin Luther King Jr., has threatened to fire the president of its Los Angeles chapter because he supports gay marriage.

During the battle last fall over Proposition 8, an amendment to the State Constitution that banned gay marriage, Rev. Eric P. Lee, was more than a tangential figure for the opposition. He was front and center at an opposition group’s large rally at City Hall and marched in the blazing sun for 15 miles in Fresno. Many other local African-American pastors prepared mailings featuring church leaders in support of the proposition and linking their views to Barack Obama, then the Democratic nominee for president.

Mr. Lee “was very helpful to us,” said Rick Jacobs, head of the Courage Campaign, a left-leaning political action group in Los Angeles that fought the initiative.

Mr. Lee said that his opposition to Proposition 8 had “created tension in my life I had never experienced with black clergy.”

"Marriage equality is not a priority in the African American community," Lee said. "We're dealing with unemployment and underemployment, a lack of public education and affordable healthcare." But Lee said he was driven to support same-sex marriage by the teachings of King, who helped found the SCLC to champion civil rights 50 years ago.

“But it was clear to me,” he added, “that any time you deny one group of people the same right that other groups have, that is a clear violation of civil rights and I have to speak up on that.”

In April, Mr. Lee attended a board meeting of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Mo., and found himself once again in the minority position among his colleagues on the issue of gay marriage, but he was told, he said, by the group’s interim president, Byron Clay, that the organization publicly had a neutral position on the issue.

So a month later, Mr. Lee said, he was surprised to receive a call from the National Board of Directors summoning him immediately to Atlanta to explain why he had taken a position on gay marriage without the authority of the national board.

Explaining that he was unable to come to Atlanta on such short notice, Mr. Lee then received two letters from the organization’s lawyer, Dexter M. Wimbish, threatening him with suspension or removal as president of the Los Angeles chapter if he did not come soon to explain himself.

The issue attracted the attention of the president of the Los Angeles City Council, Eric Garcetti, who wrote to the board in support of Mr. Lee.

Because chapters of the leadership conference operate autonomously and presidents are picked by local boards, it is not clear that the national organization has the authority to remove Mr. Lee from his post, which he has held for two years.

“It’s been our position that the local board hired him,” said Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, chairman of the local board and secretary of the California Democratic Party. “And, in fact, we are also the ones that approved his stance on the position of marriage equality. We have asked the national board if we have violated any procedures, and we have not gotten an answer.”

Lee says he sees failures in the leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; he told the Times, "Dr. King would be turning over in his grave right now."

Lee said he is not waiting for approval to continue his advocacy for gay marriage.

Mullen advised President Obama to move in a measured way on overturning the military's gay ban

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Sunday that he has advised President Barack Obama to move "in a measured way" in changing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that bans gays from serving openly in the military.

"It's very clear what President Obama's intent here is. He intends to see this law change," Adm. Mike Mullen said on CNN's "State of the Union."

"I've had conversations with him about that. What I've discussed in terms of the future is I think we need to move in a measured way. We're at a time when we're fighting two conflicts. There's a great deal of pressure on our forces."

His comments are the most recent indication that talks about the policy change are taking place between President Barack Obama and military leadership. Earlier last week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that he has lawyers studying ways the law might be selectively enforced as part of an effort to find "a more humane way" to apply the law until it is changed.

"Secretary Gates spoke recently about reviewing the policy to make sure that we were executing it in the most humane way possible," Mullen said of the Defense secretary's statement.

"The strategic intent is clear," Mullen repeated. "I am internally discussing this with my staff -- on how to go forward, and what the possible implementation steps could be. I haven't done any kind of extensive review. And what I feel most obligated about is to make sure I tell the president, you know, my - give the president my best advice, should this law change, on the impact on our people and their families at these very challenging times."

Colin Powell, who previously held the same position, on the same program said that the time has come for the 16-year-old policy to be reviewed.

Obama as a candidate pledged to end the ban. As president, he has not said when or how he will take steps to do so, drawing criticism from gay rights activists and others. The president has pointed out that Congress in 1993 made into law a policy begun by President Bill Clinton.

Mullen's remarks outraged many LGBT advocates, including former adviser to President Bill Clinton, Richard Socarides.

"Mullen's comments are offensive and insulting. It's shocking that the civilian leadership allows him to talk about a group of Americans as if we were second-class citizens," Socarides was quoted as saying on Americablog.

"How can you advocate a measured approach to equality? Deliberate is what I'm looking for. Deliberate is what we were promised. And his comments about 'the impact [of a policy change] on our people and their families' is outrageous. What about the impact of the current policy on gay service members? Are they not 'his people.' Not to mention the chilling effect official, government-sanctioned discrimination has on all of us as Americans."

"This is one of the most senior leaders of our government talking about us as if we were second class citizens. It has got to stop.

Sixteen years ago Sam Nunn and Colin Powell did this to us and no one called them on it. And we ended up with this policy. Now we must speak up. These are not legitimate opposing views. He, Mullen, is not expressing an American view of equality. And, shockingly, one of his main jobs is to articulate the policy views of his boss, the president. "

Jason Wu, the designer of Michelle Obama’s famous inaugural gown, showed his 2010 resort collection on Thursday, June 4 at the Greenwich Hotel in New York.

In a collection that honed in on a few electric colors, Canadian-Taiwanese designer Jason Wu let us taste the rainbow with fan-pleated skirts in both bright red and green, and saved the 'oldie but goodie' highlighter-yellow for the end with a peplum shiftdress that was worth the wait. Pairing these brights with muted shades of grey, Wu played with contrary forces, mixing things up to attain that contemporary look. As he explained, "I love that we paired a jersey T-shirt and a luxurious draped skirt with a diamond bracelet."

Folds were plentiful, as envelope sleeves gave dimension up top, drawing the eye to a modestly sexy neckline, in tandem as pleats and drape skirts gave structure from below the ever-present belt. Blurring the lines between day and evening wear, these electric and shapely pieces can take any woman, at anytime to anywhere. "This is how the modern girl wears it. There's no definition. It's about really convertible clothes," said Wu after the show.

This season looks were inspired by Iris Apfel, an eccentrically fashionable textile expert renowned for mixing colors and prints, as well as high and low fashion. Her exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2006 resonated with Wu, who recalled that, "She was so full of color and texture and with her sense of style, I imagined what a Jason Wu girl would do when she raids Iris Apfel's closet."

A dove feather-embroidered tulle shell, as well as a red and pink petaled coat, authentically reminiscent of real flower petals, seemed to really channel in the Iris Apfel flair that Wu was aiming for. His 'Jason Wu girl' is about being "luxurious, chic and truly modern", and no matter what convertible she's riding in to whatever destination, Resort 2010 will be just that.

Born and raised in Taipei, Wu has traveled the world from early on in life. He spent a portion of his life living and studying in Canada, France and different parts of the United States before establishing himself in New York City where he attended the prestigious Parsons School of Design.

Kiefer Sutherland and fashion designer Jack McCollough resolve issues

Looks like Kiefer Sutherland may be in the clear for the head-butting incident. The star of Fox television's "24" and designer Jack McCollough, say they’ve resolved their differences, clearing the way for the charges to be dropped. Sutherland and Jack McCollough issued a brief joint statement Friday to The Associated Press through Sutherland's attorney.

"I am sorry about what happened that night and sincerely regret that Mr. McCollough was injured," Sutherland said in the statement.

On May 7, Sutherland turned himself in and was charged with third-degree assault after a dispute involving the designer and Brooke Shields at an after-party for the Met's Costume Institute Gala in New York. Witnesses had said Sutherland head-butted McCollough.

McCollough was hospitalized and suffered a broken nose. Through her lawyer, Shields later called it an "unfortunate" situation, adding that "Kiefer has always been a gentleman."

A spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney's office declined to comment on whether the charges would be dismissed.

But now that Sutherland and McCollough say they have resolved their differences, a prosecutor may go before a judge and ask that the case be dropped. That could happen at Sutherland's next scheduled court appearance on June 22.

"I appreciate Mr. Sutherland's statement and wish him well," McCollough said in the statement.

The story spurred a media frenzy as a swarm of reporters gathered outside the 1st Precinct in Manhattan to watch as Sutherland arrived for questioning and was charged. Photographers also shadowed Sutherland and McCollough while rumors swirled about the nature of their altercation and what role, if any, actress Brooke Shields might have played.

Sutherland's legal situation may be complicated by the fact that he is currently on probation for drunk driving. He spent 48 days in jail after that arrest in 2007.

The event teamed brilliant fashion designers with exceptionally talented floral artists, each duo creating a fabulous ensemble. In addition to great dresses, the florists made the models flaunt their bulky but stunning headpieces adorned with tulips, pansies and other beautiful flowers.

The event was hosted by James Aguiar from Full Frontal Fashion and Style Network and featured apparel designers including Tory Burch, Pamella Rowland, Ralph Rucci and Cynthia Steffe.

In fashion you're either in or you're out, and as far as "Project Runway" is concerned, Bravo is now out.

Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn and the rest of the "Project Runway" gang are sashaying away from Bravo to Lifetime, now that the lawsuit between NBC Universal and the Weinstein Co. has been settled.

"NBC Universal, the Weinstein Company and Lifetime have resolved their disputes," reads a statement from NBC Universal.

"The Weinstein Company will pay NBCU for the right to move Project Runway to Lifetime. All of the parties are pleased with the outcome."

The show's sixth season — which has already been taped — will air this summer on the female-centric channel, said Lifetime CEO Andrea Wong.

In a statement, Wong called Lifetime "the perfect home" for the series. She said the network was "thrilled" to proceed with Klum, mentor Tim Gunn, and judges Nina Garcia and Michael Kors. "We're thrilled to be launching our relationship with Lifetime with this groundbreaking cable deal that includes the next 5 years of ‘Project Runway,’ our new spinoff show ‘Models of the Runway’ and the development of ‘Project Pygmalion,’ along with a package of our movies. With these upcoming shows and the success of our new series ‘The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency’ on HBO, we are very excited about the continued growth of The Weinstein Co’s television division. We are also looking forward to working with NBC Universal on the upcoming theatrical release of ‘Inglourious Basterds’ and the continued development of other projects together.”

Without question, Project Runway is Bravo's biggest hit. The sew-off show, which debuted in 2004, became water cooler TV in part because of its intense challenges and creative contestants with strong personalities that rivaled their daring designs.

The show jump-started Bravo's evolution to the reality brand behind such addictive fare as "Top Chef," "Millionaire Matchmaker" and the "Real Housewives" franchise. Bravo will air its new sartorial series "The Fashion Show," with judges Isaac Mizrahi and Kelly Rowland, on May 7.

The bad economy and no official Mercedes-Benz L.A. Fashion Week couldn't get Kevan Hall down on Thursday March 19. Kevan Hall chose to show his fall collection at a charity event instead. And what a crowd he got! It wasn't your average L.A. fashion crowd: no quirky outfits, denim or drunken hipsters. The audience at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel consisted of actresses and powerful ladies-who-lunch, including a stunning 75-year-old Joan Collins.

Former first lady Nancy Reagan, the luncheon's honorary chairwoman, was not in attendance, but the collection showcased sheaths worthy of first lady Michelle Obama, along with structured dresses in tweed and wool and Hall's classic red carpet creations in earthy shades of ruby, bronze and brown.

In the audience, actress Virginia Madsen wore a Hall creation in snug-fitting leopard print, and model-actress Molly Sims donned a bright cranberry colored one-shouldered dress custom-designed by Hall for the event and decorated with real, freeze-dried cranberries to promote a new cranberry body wash by Dial.

The medley of music from James Bond films was a clue that Hall was inspired by spy heroines. In keeping with fall’s tough vibe, he focused on sexy tailoring and body-conscious silhouettes -- a black wool sheath with parallel zippers up the sides, a body-hugging black rayon jersey dress with geometric-shaped leather embroidery on the bodice, a reversible hounds-tooth coat.

His chocolate wool wrap top with fox sleeves was a great piece, considering fall’s emphasis on shoulder details, especially paired with a sequin skirt in a scribble pattern that was low-key enough for daytime wear. For evening, a pink and chocolate brown degrade silk chiffon gown with a beaded collar was fresh and pretty.

He showed a few looks from a forthcoming sportswear line he’s launching with Paul Stanley -- an aubergine cashmere sweater coat, a cheetah-print jersey dress and a nicely shaped tweed suit with leather trim -- with recession-friendly prices ($175 pants and $300 jackets). Hall says he’s hoping to get orders from Nordstrom or Bloomingdale’s.

"I think L.A. Fashion Week will continue," said Hall, smiling at the luncheon. "But this is a different kind of vibe. It's a great setting, beautiful people, shoppers."

Three arrested and six hurt at America's Next Top Model audition

Six women have been hurt in a "stampede" outside an audition for hit TV show America's Next Top Model.

Chaos erupted in the street as thousands of hopefuls waited in line in New York.

Two women and a man have been arrested on charges of inciting to riot and disorderly conduct, a police official said.

Police didn't know what prompted the chaos involving hundreds of people outside the Park Central New York hotel in Manhattan. The panic left the street outside the hotel littered with shoes and clothing, according to news reports.

"It was pretty scary," Jessica Paravati told WNYW-TV. She said she was caught up in a stampede after waiting on line overnight, hoping for a shot at stardom on the reality show.

"The girls were running like it was 9/11 part two," said Jennifer Brown, 27, of Kensington, Brooklyn. "I feared for my life."

Officials said the chaos Saturday afternoon, involving hundreds of people outside the Park Central New York hotel, was prompted by smoke coming from an overheated car nearby that caused someone to yell "fire," sparking a model stampede at the Midtown hotel.

Mere moments later, someone yelled about a man with a gun, leading to more running and screaming chaos. The panic left the street outside the hotel littered with the would-be models' shoes and clothing, according to news reports.

"People were screaming 'fire,' people were screaming 'guns,'" aspiring model Imani said.

"Somebody screamed 'bomb,' so everybody panicked," Tasha McKethan said.

The audition was shut down after the incident, authorities said.

The hotel's phone rang unanswered. Representatives for The CW Network, which airs the show, released a statement saying it was working with authorities investigating the incident.

Some of the women had waited all night to audition for the show, which is presented by former supermodel Tyra Banks. Her agent and publicist didn't immediately return telephone calls.

Banks has said she created the show to counter stereotypes about beauty, and Saturday's auditions were open only to women no taller than 5-foot-7, which is shorter than the industry's conventions.

"I had to pee in a cup and change my clothes in the street," said Mona Knight, 18, of the Bronx, who slept on the street. "There was no organization whatsoever."

Cops arrived and placed barricades along the street. But by that point, there were already several thousand women lined up. A handful of women started fainting after getting pressed up against the wall, witnesses said.

"Everyone was so compressed, I don't think they could breathe," said Alex Saavedra, 23, who escorted his girlfriend to the audition. "Then they started passing out."

A fight broke out between two men who had been taunting each other for several hours, witnesses said.

Cops intervened and pulled the men off the line. One of them threatened to return with a gun, heightening tensions among the already-frazzled women.

Soon after, a black BMW with smoke pouring out of its hood pulled up in the street near the line, sending the sea of underdressed women scrambling to get away.

"The metal barricade fell down," said Kiara McCarthy, 19, of Levittown, L.I. "All of a sudden we heard this roar from behind us and we looked behind us and there's a wave of people falling on top of us."

Gabrielle Rose, 25, said several women started crying out in pain.

"We all fell on top of each other," said Rose, of Scranton, Pa. "People were squished against the wall, screaming, 'I can't breathe! I can't breathe!'"

Several women were treated at the scene, witnesses said. Two were transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell in stable condition, authorities said.

In the wake of the stampede, cops arrested three people: Clem Clemmons, 40; Vanessa Quiones, 20, and Michael Edwards. All were charged with inciting a riot.

"Representatives of The CW are working and cooperating with local authorities on the matter," a CW spokesman said.

No more women were allowed to audition after the stampede, leaving the diminutive ladies devastated that they missed out on an opportunity to make it big.

"No one came outside to explain anything to us," Palisade Park resident Jessica Paravati said. "We've been standing here since last night, we're out here for a reason, we want this – truly, truly want this."

"I'm 5-foot-3. There's no way I can make it into a model agency," McCarthy said. "They would turn me away at the door. We had an opportunity and it was taken away from us."

Tancredi and friends feel lucky they can walk away from a melee where there was a lack of model behavior. They also want another chance.

"We want another date," she said.

Tryouts also were being held this month around the country, including in Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles.

One would-be contestant in the New York throng said the tumult wouldn't stop her from trying again.

"This is my dream, so I'm not going to give up," Gifty Asika told WNBC-TV.

The Heart Truth fashion show — with its parade of celebrities in red frocks — is the industry's Valentine to the public, Tim Gunn of "Project Runway" said as he officially kicked off New York Fashion Week Friday morning.

The annual show, which serves to raise awareness about heart disease, the number one killer of women, features one-of-a-kind red designer dresses from up-and-comers Cushnie et Ochs and Christian Siriano to Donna Karan and Michael Kors.

Katie Couric, Patricia Arquette, Hilary Duff and Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin were among the celebrities who donned red dresses to help raise awareness about heart disease.
Jane Kaczmarek, wearing a strapless, fan-top gown by Rafael Cennamo was a first-time catwalker. She told the AP ahead of the show that her biggest concern was tripping. (She did fine.)

Former "Wonder Woman" Lynda Carter, in a one-shoulder Caroline Herrera gown, was another crowd favorite as were Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling of "Beverly Hills, 90210," who shot down the runway one after another. Garth was in flowing Badgley Mischka gown with peek-a-boo white beaded straps and Spelling wore a flirty strapless dress by Betsey Johnson with a black-sash waist and tiers of pleats.

Several top-tier athletes showed off their toned figures: Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard wore a bikini-top gown by Cushnie et Ochs, and skater Kristi Yamaguchi was in a deep-red satin gown by Vera Wang with rosettes on one shoulder.

Others owned the runway as though they were secretly moonlighting as models in their free time - Vivica A. Fox, in her spangled floor-length gown by Jenny Packham, epitomized the confident and sexy woman with va-va-voom curves, while Tori Spelling could give a lesson on walking to contestants on "America's Next Top Model" with her "girl, don't mess with me" moves, hand on hip as she hammed it up.

From his front-row seat, Mark Indelicato, the youngest star of TV's "Ugly Betty," said he thought all the celebrities were an effective way to draw attention to heart disease, but he wasn't quite convinced to switch his wardrobe to red.

"I have a stripe on my sweater and I'm wearing my Red Dress pin, but I'm not really partial to red," he said.

Mania over President Barack Obama has reached the catwalks of Rome, where a top haute couture designer showed off a kaftan emblazoned with his face and another dedicated a gown of "hope" to his wife Michelle.

Guillermo Mariotto, who designed the kaftan for Roman fashion house Gattinoni, sent an American model down the catwalk draped in the ankle-length, long-sleeved kaftan made of natural fiber. It featured a solemn-faced Obama in red and beige across its entire length and the word "Change" written across the bottom.

"I was in Times Square when he was elected and it was like just such a beautiful emotion. I had the sensation of flying," Mariotto said.

New models don't need to take modeling classes to learn how to pose for photos. Just hit the gym. A good photographer will do the rest by showing you how to pose during the photo shoot.

The best way to obtain training on how to pose is by being a model for a few photo shoots. New models learn posing from trial and error. They try a pose, then later see what the pose looks like in the resulting photo. After a photo shoot or two, models quickly learn which poses generally work best.

So, instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a modeling school or modeling classes, it is smarter to spend your money on travel cost to get to a big city to be able to pose for a top-notch photographer. They shoot models for free, so you just need to get to their by paying for your airfare and hotel.

Posing Continually

Most college guys who visit CampusMen.com have never modeled professionally. When most think of posing, they think of the movie Zoolander, where a model moves fast as a photographer rapidly takes pictures. While the male model moves, the photographer captures many photos at a rapid-fire pace.

Posing One Pose at a Time

New models need to take a slow approach to posing to find their own "Blue Steel" or "Le Tigre." Most new models follow a photographer's instructions on how to pose. The model holds still for each shot and then slightly changes his position for the next shot.

Subtle Changes Produce Great Effects

A model should avoid drastic changes when moving. Sometimes a subtle change between two very similar photos makes a photo excellent above the other. Slight changes in the position of male model's head or body can make an average photo into an incredible photo. Changes in head position of only one-quarter inch, not an inch, can sometimes make male models look younger or years older.

This gradual posing technique is best for photos that show your body because flexing can be difficult. A model must flex each muscle group separately. He flexes his abs, then moves on to flexing his quads, biceps and then extends his lats. After all this flexing, he still needs to give a good facial expression. The photo is rejected if the model forgets to flex a muscle group. When flexing, the male model does not move away from where he is standing. He moves his body while generally staying in the same spot.

Holding Poses for Long Periods

Some photographers pose their models intricately among props and surroundings. They position every prop as well as the model perfectly. The photos are treated as one would create a painting. If a model moves, the photo is ruined. This may involve holding still for 30-90 seconds, much like a statue.
